eMba residents demand fair load shedding
Mandela Section resident says it seems as though the municipality does not care about them and that is why they do not bother to put up a load shedding schedule for eMbalenhle.
Residents of Extension 22 and the Mandela Section said they are affected by the power cuts more than other residents of the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
The power cuts in eMbalenhle are said to have been happening long before the start of the implementation of load shedding by Eskom and at times they spend the whole day without electricity.
Extension 22 residents said they experience long hours of no electricity, while other areas like Secunda and Evander only experience one and half to two hours without electricity.
“We also pay for municipal services and want to know why other areas do not experience power cuts the way we do in Extension 22,” said a resident.
Residents said they tried to engage with the municipality regarding the issues affecting them, but the municipality does not want to meet with them.
Small business owners said they are also frustrated with the frequent power cuts at eMbalenhle that are affecting their businesses.
“I sell food and because of the unscheduled power cuts, my business is affected and some of the food get rotten, especially food meant to be put in the fridge,” said a spaza shop owner.
eMbalenhle residents said what angers them most, is that when they check for load shedding schedules online, they cannot find a schedule for eMbalenhle.
One resident from the Mandela Section said it seems as though the municipality does not care about them and that is why they do not bother to put up a schedule for eMbalenhle.
Residents also blame councillors because whenever residents complain, councillors blame them for canvassing for votes for the coming municipal elections.
“We do not want to be councillors, all we want is the service that we pay for monthly,” said one angry resident.
The municipality did not comment.
