Council fails to give answer about taxis
Municipality must still “gather facts” about situation.
Oliver Tambo Drive in front of the Secunda Mall has become a taxi rank and a vendors market.
Motorists usually try to avoid driving there as it often happens that only one of the two lanes are available, because taxis occupy the other lane.
Taxis are even washed on the sidewalks and street vendors have taken over the area.
“There is absolutely no control over the situation,” said a motorist.
“Is what the taxi drivers and the vedors are doing legal?
“Where are the traffic officials?” she wanted to know.
The Ridge Times asked the municipality on 25 June what the by-laws are regarding the vendors and how they are going to solve the taxi situation.
This was their reply on 6 July: “We take note of the enquiry however we are still gathering facts on the dynamics of the matter in order to give you a factual response.”
