An illegal dumping site next to the R29 road in Kinross.

KINROSS – The non collection of rubbish by the Govan Mbeki Municipality is said to be the cause of illegal dumping sites.

This emerged after the refuse removal trucks did not collect the refuse for two weeks.

Residents said they were not informed by the municipality that there is a problem with the collection of rubbish.

“I took out the rubbish on Wednesday and when I returned from work, it was still there.

“I thought they would come at night to collect the refuse, but they did not,” said a resident.

Residents said they pay for refuse removal services every month and when they fail to do so, the municipality disconnect their electricity, but when the municipality is failing to deliver services, they do not bother to inform the community.

Some residents throw their rubbish next to the R29 road when it is not collected.

A concerned resident said she is worried that more illegal dumping sites are being established, because of the non collection of rubbish on the specified collection dates.

“I phoned the number which they said we must use when the rubbish is not collected, but the telephone was just ringing non stop.

“I think that is what makes people angry,” she said.

It is alleged that the municipality had a shortage of refuse removal trucks due to break downs.

The municipality did not comment at time of going to press.
