Grass mower the ignition source for raging fire near Sasol in Secunda

Farmer sponsors hay for wild animals.

SECUNDA – A fire that began behind Marietjie School in the open veld next to Sasol, was the talk of the town on Tuesday, 7 August.

The wind caused the fire to spread to the Charlie 5 gate while emergency personnel from several services brought the fire under control.

The ground that burnt does not belong to Sasol, but to the municipality.

According to volunteers who helped to control the fire, the fire allegedly ignited when a grass mower caught fire.

Several antelope (duikers) were seen in the veld trying to get away from the fire.

Mr Jaco Horn from GTR Towing Service lives opposite the veld and asked a local farmer, Mr Kosie van der Merwe, to sponsor hay for the animals.

Mr Horn said he saw the antelope eating the hay and he was going to give them water on Monday, 13 August.

The Ridge Times reported in its website that a duiker was trying to escape and according to Mr Horn, it escaped and ran to safety.
