Residents of Bethal warned of increase in crime in the area

It is advised that community members take hands and be a part of the CPF.

BETHAL – Resident are being warned of the increase of criminal activity and burglaries at residential premises.

A total of four cases have been reported between 22 to 28 February.

Theses areas include Van Riebeeck, Mark, Eeufees and Kieser Street in Bethal.

There had also been a house robbery reported at Andersons Street.

It is advised that community members take hands and be a part of the Community Policing Forum (CPF).

The community can also report suspicious criminal activity to the police at 072 524 0133.

Here are a few safety tips to keep your home safe from intruders:
• Keep a family pet, (small dogs) inside your house that will bark when they are alerted to suspicious activity.
• Have ample exterior lighting.
• Motion sensor lighting is recommended for backyards and driveways.
• Install razor wire or electric security fences around the entire perimeter of the house.
• Install pre-warning alarm systems such as sensors along the outside walls or fencing, on the roof and in the ceiling.
• Keep trees and shrubs trimmed so that they are not used as a hiding place for intruders.
• Keep your garage, outside rooms or sheds closed and locked.
• Check that the locks on your doors and windows are locked.
• Try and change locks when moving into a new home or if your house keys have been lost or stolen.
• If you are leaving your house unoccupied, lock all outside doors and windows before you leave the house, even if it is for a short period of time.
• Leave lights on when you go out.
• If you are going to be away overnight connect a lamp to an automatic timer to turn on in the evening and off during the day.
• Lawnmowers, bicycles or any valuables should be stored out of sight.
• If you have an alarm system, activate it.
