LEANDRA – Residents of Leandra are concern about tombstones being damaged by criminals.
According to residents, everyday when they visit their graveyard they find vandalised tombstones.
“We are concern about this new act of criminality.
“Tombstones are expensive, even to erect it, then someone just comes and damages it like that.
“We don’t even know what they get out of damaging it, but if we can act against these criminals. All of us are unhappy because our loved ones whom we had buried there are not at peace,” said Mr Sipho Skhosana, a resident.
Govan Mbeki Municipality’s executive mayor, Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma, met with the community who lodged a complaint at Leandra on Monday, 1 March in an attempt to come up with a plan to fight this crime.

Mr Zuma told the community that he will try to convene a meeting with business community to assist.
“Our executive mayor responded to our problem. He said the municipality needs to check how many tombstones are being damaged and if businesses agreed to assist, then we will get standard tombstones and not the ones we have currently.
“It is fine, as long as those tombstones are replaced,” said Mtungwa Mkhatshwa a community leader.
Mr Zuma also promised the Leandra community that the issue of securing graves needs to be taken to their Integrated Development Plan.
