Taxi driver will appear in Standerton’s neighbouring town on several charges

A taxi driver is in custody after police charged him with culpable homicide, as well as reckless and negligent driving.

A statement dated 15 April from the office of the Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police, warned road users to adhere to traffic signs to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.

It follows an incident where Mr Sibonise Patrick Mathebula (31) was allegedly involved in the death of an infant in Amersfoort on Tuesday, 13 April.

It is alleged that Mr Mathebula who was driving a silver Toyota Quantum, allegedly ignored a stop sign as he was chasing after a white Toyota Avanza from Ermelo for ferrying passengers.

Two pedestrians were subsequently hit, a 20-year-old man, as well as a 23-year-old woman, who was carrying a five-month-old baby.

The baby was certified dead because of the accident and the other victims were rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

Mr Mathebula was arrested and appeared in the Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 14 April.

He was remanded in custody until Monday, 19 April for a formal bail application.

Police management strongly condemned the incident that resulted in unnecessary loss of life and called on drivers to drive responsibly.
