Leandra community up in arms about land

They are now fighting for land because the municipality last gave them stands when South Africa became a democracy.

LEANDRA- Community members continued with their protest action on Monday morning, 31 May.

Roads, even those into the township, were blocked with stones and burning tires.

Protesters brought the township to a standstill on the morning of Friday, 28 May.

They claimed Govan Mbeki municipality doesn’t keep its promises to the community.

They are now fighting for land because the municipality last gave them stands when South Africa became a democracy.

“The last time we got land was in 1994. After that, we were given unfulfilled promises. They now tell us that they built an R1-million stadium for us, but see only an open soccer field that does not account for that amount of money,” said one of the leaders.

They want Govan Mbeki Municipality’s mayor to address them before they decide to take the matter to the national government.

The protesters also said they will not stop until they are given attention.

Their protest affected many residents who use public transport to work and also learners who were forced to walk long distances to reach Megabuses that were queuing at the Leandra Police Station.

Road users were advised by the local police to avoid using the R29 (Devon to Leandra) and the R50 (Delmas to Standerton) until the issue is sorted.

Police said no case has yet been opened and no arrest has been made but they are still monitoring the situation and are working hand-in-hand with the Public Order Police (Pops).

Const Prudence Motshaisi, Leandra Police Station’s spokesperson, said the situation is now calm but they are warning motorists to be cautious.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality’s communications department said the executive mayor will meet with the Leandra community and listen to their grievances.
