Upgrading of bulk sewer line and pump station in Ext 5, eMbalenhle, resumes

“We are afraid that they can leave it and tell us that the money is finished.”

eMBALENHLE- The upgrading of the bulk sewer line and pump station at Ext 5, eMbalenhle, has resumed.

Residents have for a long time complained about sewage spills in the area.

This is one of the planned sewerage projects announced by the executive mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma, during the state of the municipal address (SOMA) two months ago.

The mayor said they are currently attending to the sewage crisis as most of their infrastructure budget is invested in sewerage projects.

He said projects worth more than R200-million are currently being implemented within the Govan Mbeki municipal area.

The money is coming from the National Government and several public and private partnerships. Residents said they will believe this once the sewage spills stop, but for now, they only see trucks moving around at Ext 5.

“We were promised some years ago that our electricity will be fixed, but today we still hear the same song.

“We don’t deny that they have started to build or upgrade our bulk sewer line and pump station, but we are afraid that they can leave it and tell us that the money is finished,” said Mr Themba Sthole, a resident.

“We will not be surprised because we are used to this kind of excuses from the politicians. Living with spills of raw sewage around us is life-threatening.”

Mr Sthole said sewage spills are a challenge for all residents of Govan Mbeki Municipality because of poor work done by incompetent companies appointed by politicians who wanted to benefit. The community said they will be relieved when the bulk sewer line is completed and working.
