Children with autism enjoy fun day at Marietjie School in Secunda

Marietjie School celebrates Autism Awareness Month.

Marietjie School for Learners with Special Educational Needs, hosted Autism Day on Saturday, April 23 at the school for all their learners with autism.

This day was hosted in celebration of National Autism Awareness Month which began on April 1 and continues until April 30.

Magriet Bekker, an occupational therapist, spoke to the parents of autistic children about what they can do to help and support their children.

“Parents must meet their young children on an emotional level,” said Bekker.

“Every parent should spend at least 20 to 30 minutes daily with their child without any interruption such as cell phones or television.

“It is difficult sometimes to put 30 minutes aside for your child, but it is worth it.

“Do not lead the actions, but rather follow your child’s interest in this half an hour and sit on the carpet with them and do what they want to do.”

Children suffering from autism also played games during the day with their parents, teachers and helpers.

All the stations for games were designed to enhance the children’s sensors and it was educational games and helped the children to explore different textures and complete certain tasks.

The parents and children received certificates after completing all the tasks at the end of the day.
