The communications department of the Lekwa Municipality warned residents that scammers are sending out fraudulent text messages stating that there will be a scheduled disconnection of electricity at a specific property, due to arrears in the municipal account.

According to Lekwa, the text message reads as follows:

“Good day it’s Kenny Ngene from Lekwa Local Municipality it’s in regards to a scheduled disconnection for the property on 95 Coligny street, Standerton 2430, because of arrears in the municipal account I tried calling earlier on but your phone went on voice-mail, we are going to be at the premises in the next 2 hours”

The municipality said no authorisation has been given for any such disconnections.

An SMS reminder was sent out on May 14, reminding residents about the upcoming payment due date for the municipal accounts outstanding payments for the month of April.
