A media statement released by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) indicates that the water levels of Grootdraai Dam continue to drop and have now reached 80%.
Previous reports showed the dam at 80.7%, meaning Grootdraai has suffered a decline of 0.7%. According to the statement, the Grootdraai Dam mirrors the other dams in Mpumalanga because most suffered declines.
“The average dam levels in the province dropped from 89.1% to 88.0%,” stated the report.
The water levels in the Water Management Areas (WMA) have followed this trend, with the Gert Sibande WMA dropping from 86.4% to 85.2%.
Jericho Dam was the outlier, recording an improvement from 72.9% to 73.1%. Nooitgedaght dropped from 81.8% to 81.0%, Vygeboom Dam from 100.0% to 99.3% and Westoe from 41.8% to 40.1%.
Morgenstond Dam recorded a significant decline from 84.0% to 74.5%, and Heyshoop dropped from the previously recorded 97.7% to 97.5%.
The DWS urges the public to use water sparingly.
The statement specifies that SA is a water-scarce country and is among the 30 dryest countries in the world, so intensified water conservation initiatives must happen to protect this valuable resource.
