Reprogramme your prepaid meter
The KRN1 system for reprogramming meters will expire on November 24. Find out how to reprogram your meter here.

The current prepaid electricity metering software is set to expire on November 24, thus it is important to reprogramme your meter.
“Customers who do not reprogram their meters will be unable to recharge electricity and their meters will no longer accept tokens, effectively ending the residents’ electricity supply,” explained Lubabalo Majenge, communications officer for the Lekwa Municipality.
He explained the process and broke it down into three easy steps.
Step 1: Purchase electricity from an authentic vendor.
This token should have 40 digits divided into two separate codes.
Step 2: Key in the first 20 digits and wait for your meter to accept the code.
Step 3: Key in the last 20 digits and wait for your meters to accept the second code.
According to Majenge, this should automatically reprogramme your meter and move it to the newly activated KRN2 prepaid electricity software.
“We urge you to ensure that all previous electricity tokens have been inserted before entering the new 40-digit code to ensure that those codes will not be lost as these codes will be valid after the switch to KRN2 has been made,” added Majenge.

When you purchase electricity from an accredited vendor, the second to last paragraph of your slip should read KRN2.
If the slip reads KRN1, your meter still requires reprogramming.
According to Majenge, all meters must be reprogrammed, whether you are an Eskom customer or municipally supplied.
“The Token Identifier (TID) is referenced to a base date of 1993 and will run out of range in 2024, causing prepaid meters to stop accepting new tokens,” concluded Majenge.
