GMM says they met targets of electricity meters reprogramming
Mayor says 29 900 smart meters have been installed. The target is 44 000.
The Govan Mbeki Municipality Mayor, Nhlakanipho Zuma, said during the council meeting on December 4 that the municipality was able to comply with the recoding of electricity smart meters rollover by November 24.
He said there might be a few meters, of people who do not buy electricity, that were not recoded.
“Those are our targets as we continue the smart meter installation programme. Up to now, we have been able to install 29 900 meters. Our target is 44 000.
“If we can achieve that target, we are hopeful that the electricity losses will be a thing of the past and this also indicates the change in revenue collection.

“In 2021, the municipality’s electricity losses were sitting at 64%. When we began with the meter installation programme, we managed to reduce it by 1%. This year we are sitting at 57%. This is an indication that our municipality is winning the fight against electricity losses,” said Zuma.
Zuma said they are now lifting the suspension on the implementation of the credit control and debt collection policy.
When the municipality released a statement in August that it had resumed its credit control enforcement by blocking the prepaid electricity meter system on overdue accounts and those who have not made payment arrangements, the eMzinoni community took to the streets in protest.
They blocked roads with burning tyres and demanded that the mayor address them and announce the suspension of both policies until October 30, for the review and now the suspension is officially lifted.
