Renette steps down at Standerton parkrun, but will still be involved

Volunteer wants to give younger generation a chance to get involved.

Renette de Sousa has been a volunteer at Standerton parkrun since its initial beginnings in 2018. Though she missed the very first event to take part in Sisters With Blisters with her siblings, she began volunteering at the very next event.

“I climbed the ladder and after years of hard work, I became an event director, handling the legal and safety aspect of events,” said De Sousa.

De Sousa completed her 250th parkrun as a volunteer on May 31 and officially stepped down from her position.

Even though her more involved role at the parkrun is now coming to an end, De Sousa will still be an active part of the parkrun community.

“I will continue volunteering and supporting parkrun, but I want to give the younger generation a chance to step up and learn how to run the show,” said De Sousa.

In her seven years of parkrun, De Sousa has made several valuable memories. She cherishes the feeling of community and the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals.

“I have seen people start their fitness journeys with one lap around the parkrun track and end up achieving stellar times,” said De Sousa.

She is excited to see what the next generation of parkrun run directors can accomplish.
