Govan Mbeki Municipality awards bursaries, revamps daycare

Executive Mayor Nhlakanipho Zuma said the initiative reflects the municipality’s commitment to empowering youth through education.

In celebration of Mandela Day, the Govan Mbeki Municipality, in partnership with MaxProf and EST Sourcing, awarded bursaries worth R68 500 to four deserving students on July 18.

The recipients will pursue their studies at Gert Sibande TVET College. Executive Mayor Nhlakanipho Zuma said the initiative reflects the municipality’s commitment to empowering youth through education.

“Our late former president Nelson Mandela believed in the power of education and continuously encouraged young people to pursue learning. As a municipality, we are following in his footsteps by doing our best to make education accessible to our youth in honour of his vision,” said Zuma.

One of the recipients, Ncedile Nkosi, expressed deep gratitude:

“This is a major achievement for me. I’m motivated to work even harder now because I no longer have the excuse of lacking funds. These bursaries have lifted a huge burden off our struggling families. We appeal to the municipality and its partners to continue supporting other young people eager to study.”

The bursary handover stands as a testament to Mandela’s enduring belief in education as a catalyst for social change.

Later that day, Mayor Zuma joined Mpumalanga MEC for Finance, Bonakele Majuba, at the Isidingo Daycare Centre as part of broader Mandela Month initiatives led by the Provincial Treasury and Govan Mbeki Municipality.

Activities at the centre included repainting classrooms, refreshing educational murals, planting a vegetable garden, and cleaning the yard. The centre also received new tables, chairs, and educational toys to enhance the learning environment for young children.
