Hospital personnel in Trichardt also donate blood

Patient Experience Manager at the hospital, Sphiwe Mahlalela, said that, as frontline workers, Dr Van Schalkwyk and Sr Zulu witness firsthand the critical role that blood donations play in patient treatment.

Health care professionals of Mediclinic Highveld led by example on January 27 when the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) hosted a blood drive at the hospital.

Urologist at the hospital, Dr Dieter van Schalkwyk, and professional nurse, Sr Siphelele Zulu, are both regular blood donors and supported this initiative.

Patient Experience Manager at the hospital, Sphiwe Mahlalela, said that, as frontline workers, Dr Van Schalkwyk and Sr Zulu witness firsthand the critical role that blood donations play in patient treatment.

“From emergency trauma cases and complex surgeries to maternity care, oncology, and chronic medical conditions, blood and blood products often project the outcome between life and death situations,” said Mahlalela.

“Speaking from a clinical perspective, both professionals emphasise that blood cannot be laboratory manufactured – it can only be received from generous donors.

“Every unit of blood donated has the potential to save up to three lives, making blood donation one of the most impactful acts of community service.”

By donating blood regularly, these two professionals demonstrated that blood donation is safe, simple, and an essential responsibility.

The management team at Mediclinic Highveld encouraged the community to consider donating blood.

“A stable and reliable blood supply ensures that hospitals are always prepared to respond to emergencies and provide quality care to patients in need.

“We commend our clinical personnel for leading by example and thank SANBS for their continued support in creating awareness and opportunities for the community to lend a hand and offer support in a very personal way.

“Together, we can make a meaningful difference. Saving lives starts with us. A small act of kindness today could mean everything to someone tomorrow.”

SANBS collected 12 units of blood on this day. To donate blood, visit the Secunda donor centre in Horwood Street or the Bethal donor centre close to SPAR.
