Community safety patrols promote security and vigilance in Sakhile

The group of LCCPG volunteers works closely with local police to address crime and keep the community safe.

With the Easter season here, the Lekwa Community Crime Prevention Group (LCCPG) volunteers are serving their community. The LCCPG has launched a series of initiatives to enhance the safety and security of residents in the Lekwa area.

The group of volunteers works closely with local police to address crime.

“We are fighting crime. Our main focus is on the evenings, doing patrols around our community, a time when the community is at its most vulnerable,” said LCCPG’s chairman, Vusamandla Simelane.

For the 30 volunteers, their mission isn’t just about presence; it’s about reclaiming the streets they call home. They alternate patrolling the Sakhile location, monitoring the area for criminal activity and drug-related incidents.

The LCCPG also hosts campaigns at local schools to raise awareness about substance abuse.

“We are a group of volunteers that works closely with the local police,” Simelane added, noting that drug-related crime remains the primary concern.

As the rest of the town settles in for the night, the steady footsteps of the LCCPG remain a constant, comforting sound. For the residents of Lekwa, these 30 individuals represent more than just a patrol; they represent the hope that through unity and vigilance, their community can sleep in peace.

Steering the LCCPG are the following committee members: Vusamandla Simelane (chairman), Sinenhlanhla Mshibe (vice-chairman), Phumzile Magubane (secretary), Lerato Selepe (treasurer), and Thembinkosi Mnisi (coordinator).
