Do not hitch a lift or offer a lift around Kinross

Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, Mpumalanga spokesman for the police, said in a media statement some motorists were hijacked of their vehicles in identified hiking spots which prompted the police to issue this warning.

The police in Mpumalanga caution the public against hitchhiking or giving lifts to hitchhikers as this may result in crime such as robberies or placing the lives or those engaged in the practice at risk.

 

Kinross Policing Precinct is experiencing lot of robberies related to hitchhikers.

 

Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, Mpumalanga spokesman for the police, said in a media statement some motorists were hijacked of their vehicles in identified hiking spots which prompted the police to issue this warning with a hope to make a difference.

 

“The police continue to warn citizens to be extra cautious so that unfortunate incidents like rapes or murder could be prevented but it seems as if some are not adhering to the advice but they carry on hitchhiking and giving lifts to strangers,” said Mohlala.

 

“It is shocking to learn that some people think that it may not happen to them. This behaviour often put their lives at risk.”

 

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela urged the public to refrain from hitchhiking or offering lifts to people that they do not know.
