Cops in alleged murder-suicide in Standerton

He died on the scene, while the woman was taken to Standerton Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

A domestic violence incident turned ugly on Charl Cilliers Street, Standerton, on April 30 at 18:45, when two police officers died.

Constable Sphamandla Melomakhule (36) from the Val Police shot his partner, Constable Nthabeleng Christina Molefe (33) from the Sakhile Police, and then turned the 9mm Beretta on himself.

He died at the scene, while the woman was taken to Standerton Hospital and succumbed to her injuries at 21:30.

He was on duty at the time and she was off duty. Melomakhule (36) fired seven shots. He had nine years of experience with the police.

According to a police report, he was in town, drove past a vehicle and saw the occupants – his partner and another man – inside it.

He made a U-turn and confronted them, taking the man’s cellphone to his police vehicle.

Molefe followed him, requesting the phone, while the man fled the scene.

She fell and he then shot himself in the head.

SAPS arrived at 19:15 and departed at 20:30.
