Day 5 of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign: 10 women are murdered per day

Unicef highlights alarming increase of GBV in South Africa.

As part of a campaign where the Ridge Times took hands with Famsa to create awareness of gender-based violence, we will publish a series of articles on this topic.

According to a recent press release from Unicef, more than three children and 10 women were murdered in South Africa daily between July and September this year.

Another 490 children were victims of attempted murder, resulting in a 35% increase from the same time last year.

This is according to the latest police crime statistics released on November 25 as the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign kicked off.

The scale of violence against children and women in South Africa is a great concern. In further statistics released by Stats SA Child Series volume 3, a study found that 58 children are sexually abused in South Africa daily.

This figure makes up 40% of the total reported sexual offence cases reported.

Another study by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), reported more than 33% of South African women, 18 years old and older, have experienced physical violence in their lifetime.
