Correctional Service officials battle it out in soccer tournament in Volksrust
The team from Standerton Correctional Centre won the tournament.
Department of Correctional Services (DCS), Bethal Management Area, held a successful one-day soccer tournament.
The event recently took place at the Volksrust showgrounds.
Soccer teams comprised of officials from Bethal, Piet Retief, Standerton and Volksrust correctional centres.
Volksrust Hospital also participated. The tournament was intended to promote physical fitness and overall wellness among the officials.
It helps officials to maintain good health, build endurance, and improve morale. It also helped create a relaxed mood that enabled officials to socialise and share sportsmanship.
The participation of the Department of Health added value to the event. Their participation demonstrated a commitment to fostering strong relationships with key stakeholders.

It also reinforced the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting health and wellness.
This demonstrated a solid partnership of different departments working together. On the field, the tournament delivered exciting and competitive matches.
In the first game, Standerton beat Bethal 1-0. In the second game, Volksrust and Piet Retief had an incredible match.
Volksrust dominated the first half as they were leading 2–0. However, Piet Retief staged an impressive comeback in the second half as they claimed a thrilling 3–2 win.
The third game featured Bethal Correctional Centre and Volksrust Hospital in another evenly matched contest.
The teams battled to a 2–2 draw in regulation time, leading to a penalty shootout. Volksrust Hospital held their nerve to win 8–7 on penalties, securing their place in the tournament.

The final match was played between Standerton and Piet Retief.
Standerton put on an impressive performance to beat Piet Retief by 3–1. The player of the tournament was Thulani Mcunu of Standerton Correctional Centre, whose hat-trick sealed victory that crowned his team champions of the tournament.
In addition to its wellness focus, the tournament also served as a valuable recruitment opportunity for departmental sub-clubs.
By showcasing the benefits of participating in organised sports and recreational programmes, organisers encouraged more officials to become actively involved in these initiatives.
The tournament was a tremendous success as it was full of energy. The energetic atmosphere allowed colleagues to connect outside of their usual work setting, strengthening teamwork and mutual support.
