The elderly have fun sports day

Seniors braved the cold.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality elderly braved the cold during their fun day at the Lillian Ngoyi Stadium on Wednesday, 22 July.

They were excited to take part in various sports activities aimed at preparing them for the next big sports event in the Gert Sibande District.

Sports activities included jukskei, duck walk, passing the ball, running and brisk walking.

The event was sponsored by the municipality and Sasol and Spar sponsored fruit.

Age-in-Action group representatives from Middelburg said their main aim is to render services to the senior citizens and to promote active aging.

“We are trying to keep them healthy and fit with these programmes,” said Mittah Ndabezitha, social auxiliary worker of the Age-in-Action group.

This group also teaches the elderly about their rights and the types of abuse.

Gogo Ethel Makhele, chairman of the Govan Mbeki elderly, said she was pleased that there were no injuries during the activities.

She thanked the senior citizens for braving the cold, as well as the government departments for supporting them and attending the event, the Age-in-Action group, Bethal Correctional Services and Spar.

The next event, the Gert Sibande District, will be held at the Lillian Ngoyi Stadium on 19 August.
