SECUNDA – Caddies from all parts of the region were excited to bring their golf experience to the table.
A total of 37 caddies took part in the Caddie Golf Day hosted at Graceland Country Club on Monday, 29 July.
Xolane Ngwalase won with 83 points, Alfred Ngwenya came second with 84 points and Raymond Thwala third, with 85 points.
If there was a trophy for player of game, Ngwenya would have won it.
Not only was he in second place, but also won nearest to the pin on hole number 15 and the longest drive on number 14.
David Nyathela got the idea of hosting a golf day for caddies and the first Caddie Golf Day was hosted at Graceland Hotel Casino and Country Club in 2017.
He believes that there are honest reliable caddies whom also love to play golf.
He explained: “I felt it was important for caddies to be developed and to build the interest of the game. I grew up as a caddie. The money I earned while being a caddie, helped me with my studies.
“I wanted to instill hope and confidence in other caddies. I wanted to give them the privilege of getting the chance to have access to the golf course. They should expose their skills and knowledge of the game. Hopefully some of them will be used in the club’s league games and be given a free membership at their local golf course. As I have done with my caddie, I paid his membership subscription fee.”
According to Nyathela, this chance gives them a sense of belonging.
It shows them that they are also considered as an important part of the game, it gives them hope that there are still people out there who cares about them.
A change in the caddies attitude was clear, they were more positive and even more proud.
To play for, and given the chance to win a prize, lifted their spirits and there were smiles all around.
“They appreciate the chance to use the same facilities as the players they caddie for. This reduces crime and theft, and it builds a good number of reliable caddies.”
The plan is to annually host the Caddie Golf Day.
To build a better future for young golfers and caddies in the Teks area, they need sponsorship.
Learners who are still at school can be introduced to the game at an early age.
The next Caddie Golf Day will be hosted on Monday, 2 September, at Graceland Hotel Casino and Country Club and will be sponsored by Jerry Sisa.
Donations of ‘second feet’ golf shoes, second hand golf clubs, clothes, caps, bags and anything golf related can be dropped off at Ridge Times’ offices.
