Boxers must stay fit during lockdown says MBO president

There are currently seven clubs in the Gert Sibande District, with two located within the Govan Mbeki municipal area (eMbalenhle and Graceland Boxing Academy).

Stay in shape by running, doing crunches and hitting a punching bag.

This is advice from Mr Lance Gibson, president of the Mpumalanga Boxing Organisation (MBO) to all boxers in the province.

“Although we are not allowed to take part in tournaments, the lockdown is not the time to slack,” is Mr Gibson’s message to the fighters out there.

He encourages the athletes to remain dedicated and focused and to keep themselves in fighting form for that time when they will be allowed to return to the ring.

“Clubs have been given the go-ahead to reopen, but several opted to remain close for the sake of everyone’s health.

“There are also many rules to follow, including the fact that only 10 people are allowed in the gym at one time – which include the managers and coaches.”

Mr Gibson is hopeful that the world of boxing will be back to normal by next year.

The MBO applied to Lotto for financial help to develop the sport in the province because there are numerous clubs in need of boxing equipment but do not have sponsorship.

The province has 54 registered clubs of which none are currently paying registration fees.

The others are in Ermelo, Hendrina, Breyten, Badplaas and Elukwatini.
