Lungile Mavundla from Kinross takes gold at Arnold Classics
11-year-old walked away with a gold medal in karate at the tournament held in Sandton in May.
Lungile Mavundla (11), a Grade Five learner at Sasolia Primary School and a student at the Universal Shotokan Karate Union Dojo in Kinross, competed at the annual Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Sports Festival in May in Sandton.
Lungile walked away with a gold medal in the boys ages 10 to 11 years, 45kg category.
“I am very proud of Lungile. He has never lost a single fight since he began attending tournaments,” said sensei Aquilar Dhlamini.
Lungile is currently standing on three gold medals in fighting in all three tournaments he has attended.

“I would like to encourage parents to bring their children to try karate. The benefits stretch beyond self-defence confidence and discipline. University bursaries are easily attainable,” said Aquilar.
He said that currently 15 students qualify for bursaries at university level and says it is a really good investment.
Lungile, who stays with his grandparents, began karate classes last year in March, with Aquilar at the Sasol Club.
“He is very passionate about karate and he spends hours practising karate. I encourage him to balance his time very well at school and karate classes,” concluded Aquilar.
