Fleurhof soccer showdown scores big

Sports is growing in Fleurhof as they hosted their first soccer tournament.

Fleurhof’s first-ever soccer tournament ended with a bang on Saturday, April 6 with U17 Orlando FC Real Sweepers winning 1–0 against Fluerhof’s Future Stars.

The tournament started on March 23 and consisted of two divisions, U13 and U17. Each division had 16 teams at the start of the season, but only Impumelelo, Fufa FC, Fleurhof Future Stars and Orlando FC Real Sweepers made it to the semi-finals. The tournament was a huge success and showcased the talent and passion that exists in the area.

The tournament was organised by Given Maphanga and Thabiso Mokeoena, who are also coaches for Future Stars. Maphanga says they started this tournament to keep young boys off the streets during school holidays and to better the neighbourhood.

Spectators, family, and friends came in numbers to support their teams and cheer them throughout the day, creating a lively and festive atmosphere at the field.

The winning team was awarded medals, new kits, and a trophy to commemorate their success while Mpumelelo Kolobile was named the man of the match.

According to coach Sakhile “Mr Cow” Nkomo, coach for Orlando FC Real Sweepers, his team had a great run in the tournament, and they managed to win all their games from the group to knock out stages.

“We had to prepare for training so that we can play good football. We worked on our build-up phase and making sure our combination play was polished and it all worked out very well for my boys,” said Nkomo.

“We played five games, scored 11 goals and conceded 0. This shows how good we were in defence even in the finals we could have scored a lot of goals but my boys missed a lot of chances,” he added.

According to Maphanga and Mokoena, this is the first of many tournaments in Fleurhof.
