Westgate angred over pedestrian crossing

Westgate is not to blame for the chaos at the pedestrian crossing, nor is JMPD.

Although Westgate Shopping Centre is being given most of the blame for the pedestrian crossing that was installed on Ontdekkers Road, management also is angered by its sudden appearance.

The Record spoke to Westgate Marketing Manager Nick Scott, who only became aware of the issue on 10 July, in order to determine the motivation behind the new pedestrian crossing.

“We had nothing to do with it, I believe Johannesburg City Council decided on its installation.

“I have come to realise that the crossing is causing issues on Ontdekkers Road – facing traffic and safety concerns – which is causing havoc for us.”

Scott says that the installation of the crossing actually has caused damage to Westgate’s property.

“The fencing that was put up actually has caused damage to our street pole advertisement boards.

“The issue that directly affects us is that taxis are less frequently using the formalised taxi rank.

“Westgate moved the informal taxi rank to the bottom parking premises of the centre for a reason – to regulate and monitor taxi traffic on surrounding roads.”

JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar told the Record that he wasn’t aware of the problems and that it is not of JMPD’s concern.

“There is a department that deals with taxi stops and ranks – the Department of Community Safety.”

The Record followed up by contacting this department, only to be ‘put through’ to a voicemail service.

The Record will persist in its investigation.
