The last resort

Resident's voice their grievances.

Taxi to most road users is a four letter word.

TLR has received various complaints regarding the pedestrian crossing opposite Westgate. Not only do the drivers of these taxis cut in in front of other traffic and stop dead, they also severely congest this strip of road. JMPD apparently says they “do not have the mandate to prosecute taxis and where they park”. Maybe the public en masse should start bothering the Department of Community Safety on 011 689 3600. According to JMPD this department is responsible for taxi ranks. The question remains – who is responsible for curbing taxis’ deadly and irresponsible behaviour?

On to another problem that seems to not go away. Although the Record gave all involved parties a chance to speak their minds, TLR still receives complaints about Die Waenhuis restaurant and pub. Unfortunately the agency responsible for enforcing by-laws is JMPD who in turn only seem interested in roadblocks, speeding fines and removing illegal signage.

Then residents in Reefhaven are complaining about a growing illegal dumpsite that’s developing across Granite Street. If it is not private property then City Parks can be contacted 011 712 5200.

Then residents are complaining about ongoing electricity theft in Geelvink Street close to Princess informal settlement. This is a widespread problem and the thieves do it in the open. Councillors Gert Niemand and Willie van der Schyf promised a task team on this problem. Niemand can be contacted on 078 743 9681 and Van der Schyf on 082 651 4424.
