Lights out in Spring Road

WELTEVREDEN PARK - City Power leaves pedestrians in the dark for a month

Spring Road in Weltevreden Park is in complete darkness when the sun goes down.

Although the road is lined with streetlights, they are not turned on at night.

According to resident Esther Greenwood the streetlights have not worked for a month. “The streetlights were on continuously during the day in December and I called City Power to complain about the lights,” she said. “On 24 December the entity turned off the streetlights and they have been off since.”

Ward 126 councillor Mike Tonkin said, “The unlit road poses a safety threat to pedestrians at night and it’s just a matter of time before someone gets mugged.” Tonkin confirmed that residents have logged queries to the entity and that he had escalated the issue. “City Power needs to take their maintenance responsibilities more seriously as these unlit streets pose a safety threat to residents.”

City Power has been contacted for comment but failed to respond at the time of going to print.
