Taxi Associations take responsibility
Taxi Associations out to make taxis and passengers safe

In an effort to take responsibility for the lives of their passengers, the members of the Dorljota and Siyazifukula Learner Transport Association have been hard at work this week. They have been learning point route and traffic control from the JMPD Community Outreach Unit’s Ouma Morudi.
“In accident scenes involving taxis, taxi drivers are first on scene and need to control the traffic. This is to prevent a secondary accident from occurring. However, to be able to do so needs training and one needs to be certified by the JMPD,” she said.

Ouma will be teaching the members the theory of traffic control before taking them out on the road to practise what they have learned.
The Outreach Unit conducts similar training programmes in schools and organisations. The unit will assess the needs of the school or organisation before training is done.
Last week, the Taxi Association’s Basic Firefighting and First Aid and Dorljota training officer, Itumeleng Chambata, said he was very happy with the effort his members were making to learn.

“We ferry passengers who have various illnesses such as epilepsy and diabetes. Learning how to handle passengers if they fall ill in our vehicles is of utmost importance to us. We want to help. When it comes to accidents, we need to know what to do and how to take care of those injured. We do not want to worsen their injuries so we have to know what to do,” he said.
He also urged the City of Joburg Municipality to work in partnership with the taxi associations to ensure that each taxi is equipped with a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher.
