Roads leading to Zandspruit were a no-go zone this morning, Tuesday, 30 June, due to protest action which saw roads being barricaded with burning tyres and rubble.
According to Ward 114 councillor Victor Mafinya, the demonstration was sparked by land invasion.

“The protest action was started by women of Zandspruit who are fed up with land grabs in Zandspruit,” Mafinya explained.
He added that land grabs have been rife since the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdown.
“Land grabbers have been taking advantage of the lockdown situation, erecting structures on private and public-owned land,” he said.

What’s sad about the situation, according to the councillor, is that this happens on land earmarked for further development in Zandspruit.
When asked about law-enforcement interventions, Mafinya said the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has been trying but their efforts aren’t enough to curb this scourge.

“This situation requires engagement from both government and private land owners in order to resolve this problem,” he suggested.
