A cash-in-transit vehicle was destroyed and a suspect’s vehicle burnt in an attempted heist on Main Reef Road, close to the intersection of Houtkapper Street. At roughly 7am on Monday, 6 July, three luxury vehicles were involved in the attempted robbery.
The armoured vehicle was travelling north on Main Reef Road when it was forced off the road by two sedans. The occupants of the security vehicle were then forced out and held at gunpoint while the gunmen’s accomplices attempted to access the cash.
However, the robbers left empty-handed as their use of explosives inadvertently damaged the items they had intended to steal. “The robbers allegedly used explosives to bomb the armoured vehicle. On discovering that cash in the armoured vehicle has been burned during the explosion, the robbers fled, leaving one of their cars burning at the scene,” confirmed police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili.
The security guards escaped without serious injury, with only one needing to be transported to hospital. A BMW X5 and an Audi A4 were recovered at a house in Florida but no arrests have yet to be made.
Florida Community Policing Forum (CPF) members assisted in alerting police to the whereabouts of the vehicles. “We would like to thank all services for their prompt response and assistance. We are thankful that nobody was seriously injured, and are confident that the police will find and capture the suspects involved in this vicious crime,” stated the CPF chairperson, Prashan Sukhu.
Colonel Muridili asked the public to assist with any information on the incident, saying, “Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects is encouraged to contact the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or or to send tip-offs on the My SAPS app”.
