WATCH: Horizon View couple hijacked and held captive for several hours

"You will regret the day you were born," the husband recalls the callous criminals telling his wife as they were driven to an unknown location in the red Polo for almost an hour.

Dark streets invoke a feeling of impending danger, even if it is directly outside your home.

When one has made numerous attempts to have those entrusted with municipal infrastructure remedy the situation, anger and emotion spew when criminals take advantage of an avoidable scenario. A newly-wed young couple arrived back at their home around 7.30pm on 14 August after a quick run to their local take-away spot.

After pulling into their driveway, the occupants of a red Volkswagen Polo, who presumably had been following them, pounced at their opportunity. The couple had begun to close the gate when two armed men sprung from the Polo and stormed onto their victims’ property. With guns pointed at their faces, the couple surrendered as the men took command of their vehicle. The couple were driven in their car to a nearby Roodepoort suburb where they swapped vehicles and the next stages of their ordeal would unfold.

“You will regret the day you were born,” the husband recalls the callous criminals telling his wife as they were driven to an unknown location in the red Polo for almost an hour.

At the thugs’ safe house, the couple were held captive for almost six hours before being driven for another half an hour to the residential part of Fleurhof. There they were released and told to “run and not look back”.

Screams for help were met by sympathetic residents who assisted the couple with a cellphone. They were able to phone family, who with the assistance of their security company, brought them home in the early hours of Saturday morning.
