Crime is a worrying factor in society, and the large number of incidents recorded by local community policing forums clearly indicate that criminals remain very active during lockdown, despite the curfew.
August saw local authorities together with Honeydew CPF and security companies respond to cases ranging from wall-jumping in the early hours of the morning to intruders attempting to steal gate motors.
Residents on Knoppiesdoring Street reported intruders who were trying to remove a gate motor from a property. When multiple alarms were activated, the suspects started running and jumping walls. Unfortunately they managed to get away.
A Honeydew CPF Sector 2 crime report on 6 August revealed two incidents that were reported in the area within 24 hours.
The first incident was a burglary on Pershout Avenue in Weltevreden Park where suspects forced open burglar bars and stole multiple items.
A motor vehicle theft on Okkerneut Street was the second incident also in Weltevreden Park where a gate was lifted off the rail and a VW Polo was stolen from the premises.
A week later on 13 August a wallet, car audio and tools where stolen out of a motor vehicle at a complex on Without Street. The thieves allegedly gained access through the green belt.
This incident was followed by an armed robbery at the corner of Bamboes and Bergpruim Streets. The thugs fled with a laptop after confronting a resident.
“Please be vigilant of your surroundings and don’t make yourself a target by leaving valuables in open sight or by standing at an open gate or door where criminals can get you,” said Honeydew CPF PRO, Michael Steyn.
After reports that solar panels had been stolen from a roof installation during the night in Allen’s Nek, Panorama Residents Association, Honeydew CPF and security companies were alerted of a housebreaking in progress.
The CPF managed to detain one suspect that was found hiding inside an outside room.
Deputy chairperson of the Honeydew CPF, Jon Rosenberg said, “We request that you alert your residents association or security company of any suspicious activities.
“There is still a curfew from 10pm to 4am, so there should be no reason for people walking around late at night.”
