Centre Management responds on Westgate ‘incident’

Ntombi and Westgate's Centre Management were contacted to follow up on the alleged incident, and that is when Ntombi reported the incident to Westgate, prompting an investigation.

On Sunday, 11 October Ntombi Sibeko from Helderkruin warned the community in a post on her Facebook timeline of an alleged incident she was involved in on Saturday, 10 October around 3pm at Westgate shopping centre.

According to Ntombi, a woman approached her and asked for her help as she was in desperate need of a sanitary pad. She asked not to be handed the sanitary pad in public but rather that Ntombi walk with her to the ladies toilets so she could give it to her there.

While they walked down the passage towards the female toilets, the woman allegedly took out her phone and called a friend telling the friend that she found a pad and she was on her way. While all of this was happening a guy was allegedly walking behind them and appeared to be minding his own business.

“As you approach the toilet, two men will approach you, one pushing an empty wheelchair and the woman will grab your hand until they get to you. The other guy that was initially walking behind you will be there to stop you from running back or running out,” said Ntombi.

According to Ntombi, she was saved by a friend who came to check up on her. “She felt I was taking too long so the woman let go of my hand and the men passed byas if they didn’t know each other. The woman took the pad and I was so confused and shocked at the same time because what just happened was weird,” said Ntombi.

Ntombi and Westgate’s Centre Management were contacted to follow up on the alleged incident, and that is when Ntombi reported the incident to Westgate, prompting an investigation.

“I just want to apologise if I did in any way instill fear or made Westgate Mall and their security look bad, that was not my intention. I just wanted to warn others so they’re aware that sometimes assisting a stranger out of good faith can lead to devastating consequence no matter where you are,” said Ntombi.

In a statement released by Westgate Super Regional Shopping Centre Management, they indicated that they were aware of the unfortunate alleged incident posted on social media (Facebook) on 11 October by a female shopper. The shopper was contacted by Centre Management and the alleged incident was reported, and is still under investigation by various authorities.
