The seedy Johannesburg criminal underworld is as interconnected as the mine shafts that run under our feet. Police have made arrests in a case that spans the length and breadth of the city.
A man was arrested in Fleurhof on Tuesday, 27 October, in connection with the murder of a Soweto tavern owner. His alleged accomplice was arrested in Kempton Park that same morning, and both men will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court on 29 October.
The suspects, aged 39 and 41, are alleged to have shot a 60-year-old man outside his tavern in Doornkop on 7 October. Police reports indicate that two men arrived at the tavern in a white Kia and after requesting to see the owner, shot him several times before driving off, leaving the man dead at the scene.
“During the arrests, the suspects were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition for different high-calibre firearms, police reflector jacket, blue lights, handcuffs, police waist belt, docket covers and a Kia vehicle suspected to have been used when the murder was committed,” confirmed Provincial Police spokesperson, Captain Mavela Masondo.
The Police’s Provincial Task Team and other law-enforcement bodies effected the arrests after intelligence information was received about the whereabouts of the murder suspects. Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela commended the team that worked together to arrest the duo.
“Gauteng Police continue to intensify efforts to bring down the high volumes of contact crimes such as murder,” concluded Captain Masondo.
