A memorial service for two slain taxi industry members was held at the Dobsonville Roodepoort Leratong Joburg Taxi Association (Dorljota) headquarters on Wednesday, 25 November. The two men were killed in a drive-by shooting on 13 November.
A preliminary report suggested that about four men driving in a Ford Fiesta stopped at the Gordon and Hendrik Potgieter Roads intersection in Florida, and fired shots in the direction of six taxi patrol marshals, leaving two critically injured. They died of their injuries in hospital.

The Dorljota public relations officer, Itumeleng Chambata, who conveyed his deepest condolences to the families of the members, colleagues and friends, said the incident was unfortunate and sad to the association, especially to the families of the duo who were their breadwinners.
“It’s so sad when such incidents happen, but some of these things are above our shoulders and we can only rely on the law enforcement to bring the perpetrators to book,” he lamented.
When asked about the case, Chambata said the police could not share sensitive details about their investigation.
