Whether a quiet suburban street or a national highway, transporting valuables is a high-risk endeavour. At roughly 10am on Tuesday, 24 November, courier drivers were mugged on Disseldoring Street.
According to the police report, two delivery men in a white Nissan NP 200 were poised to complete a scheduled delivery when a white Toyota Etios stopped alongside them. The occupants of the Etios approached the Nissan and removed the keys from the ignition of the delivery vehicle. A scuffle ensued but the thieves outmuscled the delivery men with their superior numbers.
“The three attackers were unarmed so this is a case of common robbery,” confirmed Roodepoort Police spokesperson, Captain Juanita Yorke. They unloaded parcels from the delivery vehicle into their white hatchback and fled the scene, leaving the delivery drivers keyless in the back of their Nissan.
Captain Yorke urged residents always to plan accordingly when expecting a home delivery. “Try pin down an exact time for the delivery and contact your security company to stand by. Vet your courier companies and use all your resources to ensure you are adequately prepared,” she warned.
Courier companies and their customers need to be on high alert in the closing weeks of 2020 as the Christmas season guarantees to increase their workload and value of their cargo.
