WATCH: Avoid being smashed and grabbed or hijacked

Video illustrates perfect conditions for would-be criminals

The December period is notorious for the spike in crime and with the rise in robberies of all kinds.

A video from the afternoon of Monday, 30 November, highlights the telltale signs of approaching danger. Filmed at the corner of Church Street and Main Reef Road in Crown Mines, three dubious-looking men zig-zag through the traffic in search for a target. The body language of at least one of the men suggests intoxication as he brazenly reaches through a motorist’s window.

Police have issued a few useful tips on how to avoid becoming a victim in this situation.

• Always keep your valuables, including laptops, cellphones and handbags out of sight as most of the targeted drivers have their valuables visible in their cars.

• Ensure that all your doors are locked and windows are properly closed.

• Never open your vehicle or door for a stranger.

• Always be conscious of your surroundings for any suspicious-looking character.

• Lock all your valuables in the boot or behind the seat if it is a bakkie.

• Be constantly on the lookout for suspicious-looking characters.

• If you encounter obstacles on the road, for example rocks or tyres, do not get out of your vehicle to remove them. Rather reverse and drive in the opposite direction.

• Do not hesitate to report such incidents to the police by dialling 112 for free from any cellphone.

• When approaching traffic lights at night, slow down so that you can only reach it when it turns green.

• Be wary of people standing at traffic lights or intersections; some are just seeking an opportunity to pounce on unsuspecting drivers.

• Do not respond to other motorists or pedestrians indicating that there is something wrong with your vehicle. Rather drive to the nearest garage or police station.

• Avoid quiet or secluded areas.
