What if you are pulled over by the police?

According to Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan, if one is pulled over by the police and they are not in uniform or in a marked vehicle, the police members must produce their appointment certificate.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Metro Police have the right to pull over a car on the road and to conduct a search.

However, if community members feel endangered, they are within their rights to ask the police officer to accompany them to the nearest police station to do the search.

When feeling unsafe, the community member may follow the ‘blue light protocol’, meaning one should slow down and put on their hazards. Indicate to the blue-light vehicle behind you to follow you and then calmly drive no faster than 40km/h to the nearest police station, or public space with CCTV coverage.

According to Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan, if one is pulled over by the police and they are not in uniform or in a marked vehicle, the police members must produce their appointment certificate.

“In the event that the community members still feel scared and not safe, they should drive to the nearest public space and stop.

If the police members are in a marked vehicle then their registration number should be taken and asked for their appointment certificate to prove that they are police members,” explained Captain Muthan.
