Digging deep into the pockets to spread the warmth of love
“We believe that charity begins at home. If we look after those around us, the positive effects will be contagious.”
In tough times, every extra pair of hands helps to alleviate stress and hardship. The need for community groups looking to make a difference may never be satisfied, such is the vast array of societal issues.
Mofuthu Wa Lerato, which means ‘warmth of love’, is the newest non-profit organisation aiming to tackle the problems that face community members of all ages. Created by Queen Seepe and backed by Alphonce Lephatha and a host of volunteers, Mofuthu Wa Lerato NPO is ‘using the spirit of ubuntu’ to help the downtrodden stand on their own.

Registered in 2019 but rendered inactive in 2020, Mofuthu Wa Lerato has begun to generate momentum and will aim to bring localised support to slowly build their capacity. “We will be starting our projects in the Florida area before moving out towards Fleurhof,” confirmed Alphonce. Queen outlines their mission, saying “The aim is to create projects that keep children off the streets. Education is the key to life and the key to eliminating poverty.”
The NPO brought much-needed relief to the residents of Sparrow Rainbow Village. The AIDS-focused support centre received a donation of fresh fruit and vegetables, 28 November. “It is overwhelming that people are still reaching out to care for others. It is great that people believe in Sparrow so that it can rise again,” said staff member, Jane Mabasa.

“We believe that charity begins at home. If we look after those around us, the positive effects will be contagious,” said Alphonce, who along with Queen and the volunteers purchased the fresh produce out of their own pockets. Even in the current financial climate, there are members of the public who still open their wallets for NPOs in the community.
