Celebrating 110 years

Girl Guides have been serving since as far back as 1910, and on 5 December, the members of the Western Gauteng Guiding Region gathered to celebrate the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts' 110th birthday.

Girl Guides South Africa, like all the other chapters throughout the world, aims to actively develop the full potential of all young girls and women through a clearly defined value system.

Girl Guides and Girl Scouts have been practicing these values since as far back as 1910, and on 5 December, the members of the Western Gauteng Guiding Region gathered to celebrate the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts’ 110th birthday.

All Brownies, Guides, Rangers, Adult Leaders, Trefoil Guilders and their loved ones were invited to an exciting ‘campfire’ at the Kloofendal Nature Reserve. While they could not light a real fire, the Girl Guides creatively made their own ‘campfire’ out of chopped wood and coloured cellophane.

Throughout the day, the Guides played exciting games and sang traditional campfire songs, while still making sure to learn new skills while they did so. The birthday party’s organiser, Mary Weldon, threw a fantastic party that allowed the young girls to have fun while still being respectful and practicing the skills they have learned in the Girl Guides.

Delicious cake and treats kept their energy up before more songs were sung and more laughter was shared. The day was an overwhelming success and a celebration of all the amazing things the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts has achieved for more than a century.
