Successful Christmas Market and Carols held at donkey sanctuary

Despite the rain looming, the event proved to be a success as more than 300 people attended the fun-filled market and carols event.

In support of the donkeys and to end off what was a difficult year for most people with a smile, Rest ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary hosted their very first Christmas Market and Carols by Candlelight on 5 December at Zonnehoeve AH in Ruimsig.

The fun-filled event was from 2pm to 8pm with a market, live entertainment and a family fun day that expanded into an evening of Christmas carols by candlelight.

The organisers were concerned about the early-morning drizzle, and quickly put into action a backup plan by putting up two tents.

Despite the rain looming, the event proved to be a success as more than 300 people attended the fun-filled market and carols event.

“What a fantastic day! Thank you to everyone who supported us at Rest ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary; we are blessed with the best people in our lives,” said organiser Lloreen le Roux.

The Via Action Pantsula dancers were the crowd favourites as they displayed their impressive dance moves and had the children join in for the popular Jerusalema dance.

“These guys are amazing, they danced for an hour straight, took a break and danced for another hour with so much energy. Best of all, my grandson loved them,” said Leon de Kooker, who attended the event.

The sanctuary is home to 92 donkeys and is situated in Trés Jolie AH and Zonnehoeve AH in Ruimsig. They can also be found in Schrikkloof Private Nature Reserve in Bela Bela, and in Bethlehem.

“We don’t breed, re-home, work or ride the donkeys. Here they can just rest and be pampered. They are highly intelligent creatures, capable of independent thinking and decision-making – donkeys are simply amazing,” said Lloreen.
