Women seriously injured after falling off scooter in Florida

Here are some safety tips to help avoid accidents on two wheels.

Motorists safely cocooned in their four-wheeled metal cages can often overlook the unprotected fellow road users on two wheels.

The exposed nature of travelling via bicycle, scooter or motorbike also means that extra precautions and increased awareness are paramount when using the less protected transport. A woman believed to be in her 40s suffered serious injuries when she crashed her scooter on Eeufees Avenue on 20 January. The incident happened shortly after 4.30pm and highlights the need for extra vigilance as more motorists turn to more affordable two-wheeled transport.

“The patient was treated with advanced life support interventions and transported to a private hospital for further care,” confirmed ER24 Communications Officer, Russel Meiring.

Safety comes first, no matter which transport is used. Owner of Bikeman in Allen’s Nek, Johnny Shand, shared some two-wheeled specific safety tips. He recommends the following:

– Always wear the correct gear. This includes a helmet, gloves, a jacket and long pants.
– Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy, especially tyres and brakes.
– Do your best to get additional training over and above your driver licence test.
– Keep an eye out for spillages that may cause the road surface to become dangerous.
– Be extra cautious of other road users’ habits, including indicators, lane switching and crossing intersections.
– Always have your headlamps on bright during the day.
