WATCH: Helicopter tragedy claims five lives – West Rand emergency services show their support

The West Rand emergency services community was united in their grief on Friday when they paid their respects to the four medical specialists and the helicopter pilot who had died in the tragic helicopter accident in Bergville.

The nation was left in shock after news of a tragic helicopter accident surfaced on Thursday, 21 January.

Five brave emergency medical specialists, anaesthetist Dr Kgopotso Rudolph Mononyane, cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Curnick Siyabonga Mahlangu, specialist theatre nurse for cardiothoracic and transplant procedures Mpho Xaba, advanced life support paramedic Sinjin Joshua Farrance, and National Airways Corporation helicopter pilot Mark Stoxreiter lost their lives when their Netcare 911 helicopter went down near Bergville in KwaZulu-Natal.

Most on board were employed at Netcare Milpark Hospital and had worked alongside West Rand medical staff countless times over the years.

Shocked, saddened and wishing to show their support, numerous emergency workers and other response units’ members showed up at the Sasol Pinehaven service station next to the Netcare Pinehaven Hospital to participate in a convoy drive to the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.
