Sparrow’s 30th birthday wish
Founded in 1992 by Corine McClintock, Sparrow will be commemorating 30 years of service on Valentine's Day, and to celebrate the occasion, Corine and her team are attempting to raise R30 000 by 14 February.
Anyone who has driven through the Florida and Maraisburg areas has wondered what the strange domes on Nadine Street are for, and for those who still do not know, they actually form part of Sparrow Ministries.
Sparrow Ministries is a hospice and non-profit organisation (NPO) that caters specifically for mothers, families, and orphans who have been affected by AIDS.
Founded in 1992 by Corine McClintock, Sparrow will be commemorating 30 years of service on Valentine’s Day, and to celebrate the occasion, Corine and her team are attempting to raise R30 000 by 14 February. “Since opening our doors, the tragedy of AIDS stares us in the face daily. We are surrounded by the victims of the largest pandemic the world has seen. Regardless of this reality, we refuse to be stunned into passivity by this killer disease,” reads the Sparrow Village website.

As Sparrow’s numbers grow, so too does their need for help from the community. The organisation stands by their motto ‘Get Up and Live’, and are pleading with residents to Get Up and Give so that they can continue with their amazing work.
The Village cares for children who have been orphaned due to AIDS and aims to rehabilitate adults affected by the virus. The children in their care all attend local schools and those who are too young to do so spend their day at the crèche the NPO runs. Sparrow helps the adults in their care by providing a safe space where they learn to manage their health and their antiretroviral treatments effectively, and rebuild the confidence they had lost due to the stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS. The organisation not only helps everyone in their care with their physical health, but teaches them to love themselves and helps them grow personally until they are ready to be reintegrated into the community.
