Rietfontein hardest hit by crime in Muldersdrift

“Crime cannot be fought or faced by an individual; the responsibility lies with all community members to work with the police and other stakeholders.”

Chairperson for Muldersdrift CPF, Charles Mbewe revealed their plan to increase patrols in hard-hit areas such as Rietfontein. He called on residents and community members to join the patrols or consider donating essential equipment to the CPF. “The patrols will be done on three days during the week. Due to the lack of resources available in Sector 1 and the CPF as a whole, we would be glad if members or companies could assist with torches, black T-shirts and anything that will make a difference or assist our patrols,” Mbewe requested.

He said that at a recent meeting he had with Muldersdrift Police station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Mankontsho Setlahre, it was revealed that Rietfontein was the most regularly hit community in Muldersdrift. He said he was eager to have the CPF join hands with the community to tackle the rampant crime. “We can’t fight this alone, crime affects all of us. We really need the community to become a part of the solution. The community needs to joins hands with the CPF, police, community organisations and NGOs such Gijima Tsotso. This is how we can curb the crime in Rietfontein.

“Crime cannot be fought or faced by an individual; the responsibility lies with all of us as residents and community members to collectively work together with the police and other stakeholders.”

Mbewe said the lack of volunteers makes it difficult to patrol larger areas of Rietfontein. “I will do a patrol with five members from the CPF and as we wrap up, they will hit another street away from us. We need to focus our energy on that area, and right now we can’t do it without people joining us or assisting.”

He said the aim is not to scare criminals away, but to actually arrest them. “If you scare them, they disappear for a month or two and when they come back, they come back hard!”
