Donation brings hope to ailing nurse

A heartwarming donation brings hope to nurse Sandra's medical journey, highlighting the power of kindness and community support.

Sandra Bester’s life took a dramatic turn when she found out that she was diagnosed with stage 4 heart failure and collapsed lungs in November 2023. She was admitted to Helen Joseph Hospital three times, where her doctor confirmed that her health was at risk due to her heart slowly failing.

Her partner Dalene Horseman took the initiative to set up a BackaBuddy account for medical assistance, as it was too expensive to see a specialist, purchase the required equipment, and purchase the Ozempic injection monthly for Sandra’s weight loss, which was highly recommended by the doctor.

Fortunately, Sandra’s heart and warm spirit remain a beacon of hope to her wonderful patients at the retirement village where she works as a staff nurse and continue to motivate her to exercise and pray.

The Roodepoort Northsider was contacted on Saturday, February 15, weeks after the initial article about Sandra was published, by a generous resident who was willing to donate an oxygen machine with a nebuliser to Sandra, to assist with her being able to breathe and sleep in the evenings.

Rudy Rudolph, who owns Log Industrial Automation and Control, contacted the Northsider and requested to donate the machine to Sandra at no charge, dropping it off at her residence.

“During the Covid-19 pandemic, many pensioners were in dire need of oxygen machines, and our company sold them to many families who could help their parents and grandparents fight the disease at the time.

“I was very touched by Sandra’s story, especially the part where she still makes time in her condition to continue to help others. Hopefully, the machine can assist her during this journey and, if possible, can help her patients as well at the retirement home,” said Rudy.

With tears of joy running down Sandra’s face, she remains hopeful that she will get her second chance and continue helping others.
