Teamwork makes a difference in Ruimsig cable theft saga

WRAP members receive assistance from residents in closing a trench after a copper cable was stolen.

Cable theft remains a persistent issue in the Northside, with residents struggling to cope with frequent power outages. The Willowbrook, Ruimsig, Amorosa and Poortview Residents Association (WRAP) has been inundated with complaints from residents regarding the latest incident.

On January 5, Ruimsig residents reported a power outage, which was quickly escalated by WRAP. An investigation revealed that copper cables had been stolen, and in the process, the thieves had also tampered with the Vumatel fibre cable.

WRAP member Yvette Steward expressed her frustration with the situation.

“It’s disheartening to see the impact of cable theft on our community. We’re not just talking about power outages; we’re also talking about the disruption of essential services like internet connectivity.”

WRAP took swift action to address the issue, contacting Vumatel to report the damaged fibre cable. Contractors were dispatched to repair the damage, and residents were asked to assist with closing the trench to prevent further theft.

“It was a team effort, and we’re grateful for the residents who volunteered to help us. We’re proud of our community’s resilience and determination to find solutions to these challenges.

“We are very proud of our members for stepping up to secure our infrastructure, and it shows that we as WRAP serve a great community,” Yvette said.

Residents continue to bear the brunt of these crimes, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive solution to address this persistent issue. Their efforts continue to serve as a reminder that working together makes a big difference.
